Steve Hangs Out Before Tokyo Show – Video Clip

I was reviewing some video of the crowd coming into the auditorium for the Tokyo Macworld keynote in 2001, when I found a short clip of Steve Jobs hanging out before the show. I had forgotten all about it. The quality is not great, but you still might find it interesting.

Behind the Scenes at Pioneer – Video Clip

Even though the Pioneer presentation was small, it involved quite a few people and a lot of equipment. Here is a short clip I shot during setup. It includes a little bit of the drive through Tokyo on our way to Pioneer, as well as a glimpse into the control room, where you can see the amazing video projectors (made by a company called Digital Projection) which were used at most of Steve’s presentations. Notice that there are two projectors but only one screen; they were perfectly aligned with both projecting the same image. If one bulb went out there would still be a good image.

Visit Mike’s Office at Apple – Video Clip

My first office was in the QuickTime group, located on the third floor of Building 3. I shot this video just shortly after I joined Apple. It will give you a little idea what it looked like inside the greatest company in the world. The video begins in the courtyard, entering through the ‘back’ door of building 3, heads up the elevator to the third floor, passes a shared meeting area, glimpses the marcom department and finally ends up at my office.

Monsters in the Apple Lobby – Video Clip

In the fall of 2001 there were some unusual visitors hanging out in Apple lobby. It was none other than Scully and Mike, big as life. They took time out from their busy schedule of lurking in closets to promote their forthcoming movie, Monsters Inc.

They looked great; the detail was amazing. Later I had a chance to ask Steve about them. In particular I was curious about what incredible models like that cost. He surprised me by saying he ‘didn’t know; it was something Disney had organized.’ He went on to say that ‘Disney was really good at coming up with promotional things like that.’

Boy would I love to have a set of these. Talk about the ultimate collector’s item.

Steve Jobs’ Funeral for OS 9 – Video Clip

In May 2002, at the Apple World Wide Developer’s conference, Steve Jobs staged a rather unusual ’send off’ for the old operating system (OS 9) to emphasize the point that the future was OS X. It was a mock funeral, complete with casket and organ music. It was more theatrical than even Steve typically gets.

I woke up in the middle of the night last week, thinking about something that I’d forgotten. In addition to all the photos I took while I worked at Apple, I remembered that I’d shot video occasionally. It took some serious digging to find it in my massive pile of DV tapes, but today I can present the first tidbit.

In May of 2000 I was learning how to use a Steadicam Jr camera stabilizer that I’d bought on eBay, and was walking around the campus trying to get it to work. This segment is from that ‘practice’ session. It’s a two minute ’stroll’ through the Apple WWDC party, held at Apple in May of 2000. Entertainment provided by the Rippingtons.
