Comment Spammers Suck – We Pay the Price

The comment spam is getting out of hand recently; it makes me want to scream.

Searching for a solution I came across Spam Karma 2, which I installed this morning. It is supposed to be relatively painless for legitimate users, and if it works I won’t have to resort to requiring registration (which I really don’t want to do). Time will tell. Please let me know if you encounter any problems while posting.

You seem to be running WordPress … have you tried Akismet?

  3. Mat says:

Spam comments are the bain of blogging. I’d like to be able to bill them for advertising.

  4. My blog runs on WordPress and, like Daniel said, I use Akismet and it does a really good job.

I thought you stopped google ads.. but I swear I saw some right above the comments.. oh well. Anyway, I hope the Spam filters work for you. It was so bad on my site, I finally decided to turn off comments for good. It makes the site less interactive, but people complained about using ‘Typekey’ so I just said forget it for now.

  6. onestep – I decided to try the Google ads again, after several people told me they didn’t mind them.

    Hi Mike,

I use wordpress with SpamKarma and love it. As yet i havnt found a better solution. Spam Karma automates a lot of the process and does a really good job of picking out the real comments and the spam ones :)

Love your blog by the way.

    cheers

I’ve been using SpamKarma for about a year now, and it’s been great. The occaisional spam gets through, but the amount that gets through is nothing compared to what I used to get.

  9. Mike, as some commenters already said, try Akismet.

Akismet is included in more recent versions of Wordpress, and SK2 works with it very neatly. I use SK2 and it’s a charm. Mind that you donate once you realise how much money it’s saving you (because it’s saving you huge amounts of time, and giving you peace of mind); and keep an eye on the “General” tab, since that’s where announcements pop up.

In short, ignore those advising Akismet. SK2 does it all, and better.

  12. Hi Charles – Nice to hear from you.

I donated to SK2 the day I installed it; it was immediately obvious how well it worked.

BTW I’m getting these warnings (which aren’t fatal – they’re only warnings; imply that perhaps two of your plugins are trampling on each others’ feet) when I post a comment:

Warning: session_start(): Cannot send session cache limiter – headers already sent (output started at /home/users/web/b1685/ipw.writersblocklive/public_html/wp/wp-content/plugins/SK2/sk2_second_chance.php:2) in /home/users/web/b1685/ipw.writersblocklive/public_html/wp/wp-content/plugins/pxsmail.php on line 2

I think you should use a word box and have people type the text that appears. It is easy to use and will cut down on your stress.
