‘Fun New Products’ Coming From Apple

iCal for the 28thYou’ve probably already read about the invitations that Apple sent out inviting the media to come to Cupertino on the 28th to see some ‘fun new products’. The choice of words really struck me. My first reaction was some sort of game machine, or maybe the much-speculated larger iPod, but that doesn’t seem to fit the wording.

Coming from Apple, this sort of ‘teaser’ phrase is usually not literal; rather it has some clever twist that becomes fully clear after the announcements have happened. But I can’t figure out what it might be.

Anyone have any ideas?

Update
I’m now guessing it will be a new Mac mini. I couldn’t think of a product they would describe as ‘fun’ (besides PhotoBooth), but looking at the description of the current mini I noticed this phrase (emphasis mine):

“Mac mini provides what you need to have more fun with your music, photos and movies — right out of the box.”

  1. I can’t come up with a good idea what it is.

How does it feel to be “on the outside” again with the rest of us when it comes to these secret announcments? I assume it can be more exciting, but you probably also feel like jumping back in at times.

When I graduated from high school after running stage crew for 6 years (2 in junior high), I wondered what it would be like to go back and see a performance as a regular audience member. I still haven’t done it, and think that I would be trying hard not to jump out of my seat and help out.

Anyway I guess we’ll all find out what Apple’s up to soon enough. They can sure build a buzz.

    New Shuffle
New iPod accessories (Boombox? Maybe a digital camera attachment-Steve seems to really love Photobooth)
    Asteroid?
    MacBook
Reminder of Crossgrade for Pro Users.

  3. Michael – yes, very frustrating being on the outside at times like this.

  4. Somebody says:

    I can’t wait a week! It’s probably something fun…

    Apple-branded Segway!

  6. Hopefully it’s not a new iPod. :)

Who knows, they pretty much can launch anything they want.

Apple has gotten exceptionally good at pumping out awesome new products. Fast. It’s killer on my wallet. I say don’t look for those full-screen touch screen iPods anytime soon. All the buzz just started with some photoshop’d images… not an actual rumor.

  8. an intel-MacMini! Haha, yeah I wish :) . But an announcement on the updated Intel iBook will be great :)

  9. Joe says:

I’ll go out on a limb here and say it’s the new Mac Mini. This one will be slightly thicker with a built in DVR and Intel processor, seamlessly intergrated…will truly be part of the “digital livingroom” that everyone has been talking about for a while.

Or maybe that’s just what I hope it is. :D

I would stress the words “new products” as opposed to updated existing products. There may be totally new products.

  11. Edicius says:

I would like to point out the “S” in “fun new products”.

    Just 6 days to wait : It’s unhuman !
A lot of people are waiting for :
    - an Intel MacMini with ipod dock + frontrow
    - an Intel MacBook replacing the ibook

And it’s a long time now that Apple did not present a new kind of ipod.

Also, where’s the ipod-hybrid-newton with ipod nano style thing we all dream of ?

  13. guillermo says:

I hope it’ll be the new mac mini (and then my switching process will be completed, hahaha).
Anyway, I would like to know something, When Apple announce an event like that, everybody at Infinite Loop knows what it is about or just some departments have that privilege?

Does anybody remember how much fun Steve had demoing PhotoBooth?

Think they might rev the iSight to go along with the new Mini?
