MacBook Pro

It’s going to take a while to get used to that name. PowerBook was such a great name; I hate to see it go.

Funny really, after 24 hours I really like it. Not soft and gentle like ‘PowerBook’, but snappy and vibrant. (I even liked the name of my TiBook).

Isn’t this a process of getting the brand wrapped up around the growing army of newbies saying that they use a Mac? Which Mac do you use? A ‘Powerbook Mac’. Ahaaa.

I’ll go with MacBook. Its only the name after all.

  2. Fred says:

Yep, I’ll just keep calling it a PowerBook. Maybe enough people will do it, and they’ll just drop the Macbook thing. It really is a lame name for a machine that looks to be pretty friggin’ awesome.

  3. Leo says:

Yeah, there will be a lot of ‘refusal’ of adopting the MacBook name… it really does make it sound cheap. I wonder if they could have got away with “MacNote Pro” ?

Furthermore, why no firewire 800? And I REALLY wish they put 2 buttons for the trackpad. I may be alone here, but I really plan on having a dual boot system, and that – other – OS really *needs* a right-click.

I got a feeling that Steve has “special” plans for the 17″ Powerbook Pro… :P , such as making it the most powerful, true Pro level, kick ass portable ever put out there. With all the extra space available in the 17″ body, what if it was released with 2, count them TWO 1.86 Ghz Duo cores, 2GB of ram, and an extra 2 FW 800 ports, and perhaps an even more powerful graphic card (is there such a thing?) hmmmmm,…

shoot, just drooled all over my keyboard!

  5. Anders says:

Even better idea for the trackpad: make the single mousebutton touch-sensitive like the Mighty Mouse. When you click on the right side of it you’ll right click. I should patent that.

I just saw the Apple/Intel commercial and it makes more sense as to why Apple renamed the PowerBook:

At the end, it says “[Apple logo] Mac”, which probably a new tagline of sorts. Looks like the focus is to put “Mac” in all the hardware names.

Japan’s already on the right foot: since “AirPort” is a trademark already reserved in Japan, Apple renamed it “AirMac” in that country when it was released years ago.

And now “PowerBook” becomes “MacBook Pro”. Sounds silly yah, but I’m sure it’ll catch on soon enough. :)

MacBook really sounds bad…it´s too damn obvious for Apple, dont´you think?

  8. I confess that’s it’s already starting to grow on me. It’s strong from a branding perspective too.

  9. Klaus says:

I fully agree, too. Apple wanted to get rid of that “Power” because it associates with PowerPC and that is past as we know.

Hey Mike! I heard of your fantastic site because metamac of Germany published an article… Keep going!

    Greetings from the “Black Forrest”!

Well think about hat: if it would be possible to run winblowz on Apple MacBook, then people will say: I’m running windows on MACbook. Still MAC :) )) Of course I don’t know why people should want to run win on Apple computer.. For good design? :)

Well.. I feel that I’m getting used to new name.. :)

I have a feeling that Steve “Being done with Power” is his way of erasing the legacy of the “Beige Years”

That goes for the word “Power” and the “Power” processors. NeXT was made for x86, and from what I’ve heard, it’s jury rigged to run on PPC because that was the hardware Apple was working on at the time. When Steve got a chance to build up this backup plan for going to Intel (they learned from the 68K to PPC Switch) he took it. When they went for it it was just when the x86 version was coming into its own and they foresaw the problem with the 970FX and upcoming staleness with Freescale’s G4s.

There’s only one name suitable for such a fine machine: ProBook…

All told, I’m a little disapointed in the specs of the macbook. There are already 64bit based dual core pc notebooks. Also, the limit of 1440 for the sceen resolution when you can get a 15.2″ Dell notebook screen that supports 1920*1600 — that alone kills my excitement. Its a pain to work in Flash or Director and even Photoshop on anything with less than 1600 pixels wide and I’d rather sacrifice operating system over screen resolution. So I guess my PB will go on collecting dust on the shelf (waiting for those rare occaissions when I need a mac) while I continue to work on my Dell hoping that Apple decides to give us screen options on the 15″ (I hate the 17″ form factor — try using one on a plane).

  14. Rupert says:

I ordered a MacBook as soon as the web store came online again during Steve’s ‘note. However for the plane I use a Toshiba Portege Tablet PC in tablet mode.

When are we going to see a Mac tablet PC?
