Screen Resolution Poll – Thanks for the Input
I’d like to know what resolution most people are using for their main computer monitor, to help in optimizing the layout of the site. If you’ve got a minute, please click here to stop by the forum and take the simple, one question poll. Thanks!
Update – Thanks to everyone who gave feedback here. It has helped to confirm some key points:
The average screen size/resolution is clearly on the rise, but very few people use the entire screen area for their browser window (I think this is a Mac trend; many Windows users that I have observed keep their browser ‘maximized’.)
Everyone hates horizontal scrolling
The websites that assume anything larger than a window about 8-900 pixels wide are asking for trouble.

Why ask about screen resolution? What you really want to know is the width and height of the web browser window. That is bounded by the screen resolution, but is not equal to the screen resolution. For example, I have a 1920×1200 screen, but my web browser windows are around 720×900.
I know what you mean, but I’m more curious about absolute limits at the moment. Mike
I use 1024×768 on 12″ iBook.
The goal should be to make the site fit comfortably within the browser windows (not the screens) of the most users possible. Anyone who has to resize their window to read your site will be annoyed.
I’ll bet a nifty bit of Javascript could tell you the browser window widths of all visitors automatically. Then people wouldn’t even have to click buttons on a poll…
15″ AlBook (January 2005), so 1280×852 or whatever the heck it is.
Although as John points out, most people’s browser windows are nowhere near full-size. Mine, for instance, is about 900×700 or so.

Mike,
I use 1440 X 900 and 1920 X 1200.
Also I suggest you check out Google Analytics which report among many other things screen resolutions.
1600×1200 on the desktop and 1440×900 on the laptop.
It’s more a matter of curiousity for me, than any specific plans for the site layout. (My plan for the foreseeable future is to lay it out so it’s comfortable on a 1024 x 768 display.)
I’ve just noticed that so many websites seem to be getting wider and wider and wider as time goes by. It got me wondering about how that must really annoy people with smaller screens. On the day of Steve’s keynote even the Apple home page had a new wider layout, and it really irritated me. But the next day the layout was back to the original width. I can only imagine the tidal wave of complaints they must have gotten to change it that fast.
Matt – I’ve been trying to get into Google Analytics for months, but so far no luck.
1680 x 1050 on the desktop and 1280 x 854 on the notebook.
But if you make the page wider than it is now, I’ll stop opening it and only read the RSS feed.. ..oh, wait, don’t you reverse your decision on full feeds now. Let’s just forget what I said.
LOL
fds – you mean it’s not OK to require a 1600 pixel wide window to see the site? Damn!
1440×960
