Screen Resolution Poll – Thanks for the Input
I’d like to know what resolution most people are using for their main computer monitor, to help in optimizing the layout of the site. If you’ve got a minute, please click here to stop by the forum and take the simple, one question poll. Thanks!
Update – Thanks to everyone who gave feedback here. It has helped to confirm some key points:
The average screen size/resolution is clearly on the rise, but very few people use the entire screen area for their browser window (I think this is a Mac trend; many Windows users that I have observed keep their browser ‘maximized’.)
Everyone hates horizontal scrolling
The websites that assume anything larger than a window about 8-900 pixels wide are asking for trouble.

1024×786 is the minimum; 800×600 is dead.
My monitor: Dell 20″ Widescreen 1680×1050.
I have a strong preference for using the “” tag so that the page is centered on my screen, and not anchored on the left side. It’s good to plan for a very large horizontal size, i.e. 1920+ in case you ever use a background image on the page that is tiled for a repititive effect.
Just my 2 cents as a web designer.
1680×1050 by 2, both Dell 2005FPW
Also got an iBook running 1024×768.
15″ Studio Display – 1024×768
1680×1050 on a 21″ Cinema Display
1920×1200, but I don’t think you should design for _that_.
You know you can get this from your site stats right? Or go buy mint.
1024*768 unfortunately (12″ powerbook)
1440×900 – but usually, as posted before, my browser isn’t in fullscreen mode all the time.
17″ @ 1440×900.
With a 1200×878 browser’s window.
1152×768 – PowerBook G4 550 Mhz
1121×693 – Safari’s window, the Dock eats the bottom

1024×768 PB 12″
1680×1050…
and you don’t want the content thaat wide, when reading I find it better to have a bit of a smaller width. Maybe a fluid layout w/ a maxwidth?
