Steve Promotes Me, By Accident

The keynote is over, the adrenaline starts to subside and I’m safe back in my hotel room; I finally get around to checking my mail. I find a note from Markus Fest, the original creator of Toast, congratulating me on my promotion. He had watched the keynote webcast from Germany, and his sharp eyes had noticed the slide that Steve put up before my demo.

My actual title at the time was ‘Director of Product Marketing – Professional Applications’. To keep it simple, Steve introduced me as the Director of Product Marketing at Apple, implying a broader role. But the slide he put up was the real killer; it said ‘Director of Marketing, Apple’. In the hierarchy of titles in most big companies, that’s a very large promotion.

When I spoke to my boss later, I asked him if I was getting a raise to go with the new title.

Haah! That’s golden. I wonder how many people caught that during the event. Thanks again for sharing these moments with us. Despite his possible disapproval, I hope Steve will consider that these light-hearted asides could do wonders for public relations and Apple itself.

I always knew was a… there i s no nice way to say it… so… I’ll just say *bitch*, He’s a *bitch*, but a nice *bitch*.
I could never work for the man, I’d punch the *bitch*

So did you get the promotion and the raise?

Gates does less than perfect products, therefore when he makes a public mistake it makes him look even more ridiculous.

Jobs makes excellent products, and his genious is kinda intimidating in a way. Therefore when he makes a silly mistake it makes him more approachable and more humane.

This blog definitely makes good PR for Apple in my perspective.

I guess you didn’t get the raise but did u get the promotion?

  7. No, the whole thing was just Steve’s way of making the message more clear. It would have been needlessly complex to give my precise title. What he said and showed on the slide communicated to the audience what my role was in relation to the product I was demonstrating (Final Cut Pro). Mike

Hi Mike, great story, and after reading the recent postings on M$ slides vs. Stevenote slides elsewhere on this site (ROFL), my impression is that you would rather get a promotion (for a few minutes) than having the slides look messy.
    Cool!
