I hate to contribute to the silly discussions about Steve’s wardrobe, but I thought you might enjoy this shot that I snapped during a keynote rehearsal*. Steve is working on his slides, while the producer and director make notes of any changes required. You’ll notice the missing turtle-neck and blue jeans. It was common to see him dressed like this around Apple.
Steve looks a little distracted, but really he is just concentrating on the monitor in the front row of the auditorium which shows his next slide.
*National Educational Computing Conference (NECC) in Chicago – June 2001.

It’s kind of odd. He’s not supposed to have legs, somehow. Although his taste in shirts doesn’t seem too broad, does it?
Did Steve ever object to you taking all these candid shots of him at work?
Dan – not that I know of. (I doubt that what I did was on Steve’s ‘radar’ at all.)
Did Steve really wear always those kind “cheap” clothes?
Shirt tucked into shorts… now that’s a fashion statement
Great shot Mike!
Steve doesn’t look like a typical CEO in shorts…or is it the norm in Silicon Valley?
Does he wear long sleeve shirts the whole year?!? He sure looks funny with the shirt tucked in his shorts…
I’m a bit more worried about that font up on the screen
Now could you move the camera a bit to the left? Thanks.
Kyle – I think that’s ‘Marker Felt’. As I recall, Steve used it on his slides for a while.
Mike
Which keynote is this from?
Robert – took me a little digging to figure it out, as I shot it with my film camera (no EXIF info to give me the date!) But I finally found it; it was the National Educational Computing Conference (NECC) in Chicago, in June 2001.
Looks like typical Steve casual to me. I used to see Steve in those shorts, that shirt at lunch during the summer.
aloha
Not sure that font is marker felt… the dot over the “i” is square on my marker felt
Rich – now that you mention it, it does look different. I must be mis-remembering.
What?!
Steve isn’t a person?
