In May 2002, at the Apple World Wide Developer’s conference, Steve Jobs staged a rather unusual ’send off’ for the old operating system (OS 9) to emphasize the point that the future was OS X. It was a mock funeral, complete with casket and organ music. It was more theatrical than even Steve typically gets.
Update
A reader hooked me up with a full-length version of the funeral video, so I replaced my short clip with that one. Enjoy.
QuickTime MPEG-4 format, iPod compatible.

Hee hee.
It was the first time I had seen that kind of thing outside the WWF (not WWE) I have to say… I kinda like it though.
Jaja, he’s very funny. It’s very original
he’s Always been very funny to me…
It might just be me being highly blonde, but… where’s the link to the video, exactly?
Ok I found it now: the big button that says ‘click to play movie’… I swear it wasn’t there before…
thanks! I love these little clips that show up
keep them coming!!!
I had trouble finding the link, too
that’s a very weird thing to do with a software product. Something only Apple would do
you’ve got to give it to the guy who proposes this idea to steve in their brainstorming session to introduce Mac OS X.
I mean, you can just imagine, in the conference room:
Mike, “I know, we’ll hold a little mock funeral for OS 9, to make it clear that we’re moving forward and pok a little fun”
Dead silence.
Steve Jobs slowly turned to face mike, eyes on him like an eagle….
So great. Every keynote he does is just priceless. I guess the time at Berkly was well spent.
