Suggestion Box

This is the place to leave suggestions and requests.

  • Topics you’d like to see covered
  • Things you’d like to know about working for Apple that I may not have covered (or even thought about)
  • General stylistic and editorial comments about this work in progress

I’ll be editing these comments more strictly than I do in the other comment areas, to keep it concise and on-topic. Please use the comments area of individual posts if your suggestion relates only to that item.

Hi, I just read your reply to “Rini” (he asked for a better way to read the book in the midst of all your non-book posts) and indeed the category “Mike’s Book …” works great except I don’t think you should have the posts: “Exaggerating My Own Importance” and “Sneak preview of some future topics” as they are not a part of the book per-se.

I also have a little request (not sure if you were even involved in this). Remember WWDC2005 (I think), where Steve was showing off the new iPhoto and suddenly the machine crashed and he switched to a backup. I was just wondering what kind of reaction Steve would have about that issue after the show… was he upset? did people get fired? etc.

Anyway, you’re doing a great job… I love your stories so far.

Mike, I really enjoy the stories you’ve written and I look forward to more (and the book too). A RSS feed would remind me to come back to visit whenever there’s something new.

    Thanks!

    full feeds, please.

    pretty please?

I’d like to how Apple gets all the OEM factories to keep their mouths shut before aproduct is officially introduced.
Also, is it true that in Apple, no one other department knows what the other is doing?

Personally I would love to see more on the iPod’s conception. Things like how it came to be in terms of physical form factor, reliance on iTunes, creation of the Scroll Wheel/Click Wheel et al.

For example, why did Steve Jobs suddenly take an interest in music? And did he even believe he could make it successful, dealing with pirated music, illegal sharing and general competition with other digital music alternatives that did not include hard disk storage? Did he or anyone at Apple foresee the iPod boom we are in today? Did they foresee the interest in Apple’s iPod as a means to switch to Apple’s operating system? Did they think that in four years time 75% of all digital music players sold would be an iPod?

Personally all that stuff would amaze me considering you can’t get through a day in the world of technology on the Internet or even newspapers without at least one DTiA (designated to iPod article) and multiple references in surrounding topics, like a competing online music service or digital music player reviews. Could that response have possibly been preempted?

Mike, I love the site so far. Just one idea about a topic of interest.

I am curious to know opinions from inside Apple on the rumor sites. Do they have any effect, have you ever seen Steve react first hand? I think a lot of die-hard mac fans would love some detail on this subject.

Thanks, keep up the great work.

As someone has mentioned before, I’d just like to reiterate the request for full RSS feeds! That’s the beauty of RSS!

What´s the story about the HP / iPod thing? Did it fail because HP wanted to make design changes?

And…why did Apple kill the Newton PDA?

  10. Robert says:

    Enjoyable!

Rough Drafts are interesting, but have quickly grown tedious (especially in the RSS context). Any chance of splitting RSS feeds to have one with no Rough Drafts? I’m content to wait until an entry is complete to read it…

  11. It’s a good idea, but I’m not sure how I’d do it. Anyone out there have ideas?

Also note, because of the nature of this project, some items may not be ‘finished’ for months.

    Hey Mike,
I like what you’re doing here, but the organization just seems to be absent. Can you do things by a more descriptive category system such as “Early Years”, “DVD Studio”, “Life at Apple”, “Steve encounters” etc. This will help people visiting later on in the site’s life find the information they’re looking for. Maybe even a “Rough Draft” category that you can then change the articles category once finished?

  13. Jay Contonio says:

Heh, I just noticed the rough draft category. My bad.

  14. Jay – As I write more segments I’ll be creating more categories to help organize things. Things look especially chaotic now because I’m just getting started.
