This is the place to leave suggestions and requests.

  • Topics you’d like to see covered

  • General stylistic and editorial comments about this work in progress

I’ll be editing these comments more strictly than I do in the other comment areas, to keep it concise and on-topic. Please use the comments area of individual posts if your suggestion relates only to that item.

Its hard to know when rough drafts are updated. Not sure of a solution here, but it’d be cool to somehow be notified of edits/updates.

Maybe put a mailing list signup online and then at the end of each day, you could send a general email with links to the different topics/stories you’ve edited/posted since the last email? That’d be pretty cool.

Could you put in some alt text for the images that are supplied from off-site? I have Firefox set to “load images from the originating site only” to reduce the number of adverts forced on me.

  3. Eddy – right now I’ve got nearly all the images hosted on one of my other domains. I do this to spread the load around and avoid bandwidth overcharges, since the traffic has been ‘through the roof’ lately. I hope to resolve this eventually, but for now that’s the way it has to be. I usually put alternate text for the images, but may have forgotten some. Thanks.

    Hi Mike.

To an Apple alum (six years as an SE in the field), this is an interesting site. A couple of ideas for chapters….

Track the gestalt of Apple through the years — the feel of the early garage days; the high-flying 80’s, when every party (and everything was a party) was _really_ a party; the whistling past the graveyard of the 90’s, when Competitive Analysis kept telling anybody who would listen that Microsoft was serious about this Windows product and was going to get it, if not right, close enough, soon; the Return of Steve. Maybe break it up into eras by CEO….

Another chapter idea: Technologies/products that didn’t quite make it. You might include those that did become product but were retired, the Newton being the most notable but possibly including other goodies such as the PowerPC (mine still works!) There was a skunkworks scheme to do an x86 MacOS 9 port called “Raptor” back in the day; I am sure that many others came and went without our ever hearing about them in the field.

And one more: Where Are They Now: Track down former Apple luminaries and see how/what they’re doing today. Where’s Ian Diery today? He was a blast; I read one article that claimed he was a chief proponent of the “testosterone school of marketing,” which seems about right.

    Good luck!

Hello. I just noticed that you changed the look of the site. I have to admit that it stands out a little more, but I think the other way looked cooler and more inviting because it was a nice shade of blue/gray, and just brought it all together nicely. Just a suggestion. As for the rest of the site, keep up the great work!

  6. Hi Steve – You probably caught me in mid-update. It was looking pretty strange for a while. But I think it’s done for now. Mike

    Hi Mike,

Nice blog, n I found that you changed the backgroud to some yellowish with
faint lines, I ‘m not sure what others feeling on this , myself feels a bit distracting than the black one. Frankly, I ‘d like to read the one with black more, since the content seems won’t be distracted than the current one.(just my personnal opinion ) :)

Very good job , keep up. Lolex

Loving the website. Hating the new background. Don’t get me wrong I’ll still read it, but my eyes will probably start bleeding, and that would be yucky.

  9. No one seemed to the ‘legal pad’ background, so I ditched it. Thanks to everyone who wrote or left comments! Mike.

can you please explain more about the structure within Apple.
I noticed lots of product managers get shifting to a differnent project, such as the iBook PM from 2 years ago moved to PowerBook PM, then now she’s in a different position again. Does this happen often?

    Hi,

I was just wondering if you would be able to implement a facility that would allow you to receive e-mails to say that comments had been added to an article you had commented on. This would be useful, as at the moment I generally never remember to read any follow ups to my comments.

Also I was just wondering if you know whether Steve Jobs maintains “homepage.mac.com/steve” or whether he gets someone else at Apple to do it. I am surprised if it is about his family as he is always so secretive about his personal life. Also I have to say that the site design is pretty terrible and 90’s ish.

Finally, I would really like more articles about the architecture and interior of the Apple building. I have to say that it has always looked a bit tacky (without the clean look expected from Apple) on the outside but this might just be the photos. Also your photo of the interior looked nicer.

  12. There isnt a place to ask you random questions. Maybe a forum or just a topic like this for random questions would work. Topic would be easier for you to make but would be more chaotic. Forum wouldnt really fit with the site style but would so great beyond belief. Choice is yours…i have no bias to which you choose….maybe….

    PS-
Random questions have the ability to inspire your writing and give you new ideas.

  13. Love your pieces. Guardian today. Fantastic. You get under the skin. Something interesting too in yesterdays Guardian on the hippest young writer in the US at the moment JT Elory. Wondered what your own take is. Do you thing he/she is David Egagrs, Dennis Cooper, Gus Van SAnt, Morrissey or Madonna? Or a complete original. Check out the website above. They claim that JT spends a lot of time in Barcelona and he has made something for them….
